Her Excellency Ambassador Amma Adomaa Twum-Amoah is a distinguished Ghanaian diplomat and the newly elected African Union Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs, and Social Development. Prior to this role, she served as Ghana’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union and the Economic Commission for Africa, where she played a pivotal role in strengthening Ghana’s engagement with key continental institutions.

Ambassador Twum-Amoah’s diplomatic career spans several decades and includes notable leadership positions. She was Minister/Head of Chancery at the Embassy of Ghana in Washington, D.C. from 2012, and earlier, from 2005 to 2006, she served as Minister-Counsellor and Acting High Commissioner at the Ghana High Commission in Canberra, Australia, where she led the reopening of the High Commission. Additionally, from 2000 to 2002, she was Counsellor and Head of Chancery at Ghana’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva, contributing to Ghana’s human rights reporting and UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board.

She also previously served as the Director of the Economic, Trade, and Investment Bureau at Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration and as Minister of Plenipotentiary/Special Government Projects at the Embassy of Ghana in Washington, D.C., U.S.A., among other senior positions. Within Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, she has held strategic leadership roles, including Deputy Director of the Policy Planning and Research Bureau and Acting Director, overseeing critical diplomatic and policy initiatives.

Her extensive experience in crisis management and conflict resolution will be instrumental in addressing Africa’s health, humanitarian, and social development challenges. In her new capacity at the AU, Ambassador Twum-Amoah will lead efforts to strengthen healthcare systems, drive social policy reforms, and enhance humanitarian response mechanisms across the continent. Her leadership is expected to bring renewed energy and innovative solutions to the African Union’s commitment to improving health outcomes, fostering inclusive development, and advancing Africa’s humanitarian agenda.
