The Catalytic Framework to end AIDS, TB, and Malaria by 2030 provides a business model for investing for impact. The Framework emphasises the need for generation and use of evidence for: policy and programme interventions; advocacy; and capacity building. The Framework underscores the need to ensure that available resources should be invested and targeted where the disease burden is highest, ensuring that no one is left behind. The new global AIDS strategy for 2021-2026 focuses on tackling inequalities that have driven the epidemic, builds on the progress made, and sets new targets of 95-95-95 for 2025 to bridge the gaps and put us back on track ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. However, we must join hands and ensure fruitful implementation of the transformative, continental goals and targets.

Experts recommend that effective prevention should be based on tailoring ‎prevention to the local context and epidemiology, using a combination of prevention ‎strategies, expanding programs and sustaining efforts over time. There have been renewed calls for the ‎strengthening of prevention efforts and improvement of access to resources for HIV ‎preventive care in Africa. In attestment, AU Member States recommitted to the fight against HIV/AIDS with a new political declaration during the High-Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS (8-10 June 2021)‎.

It is therefore a critical time to expand advocacy for HIV prevention and care, strengthen country ownership and support mutual accountability. In this context, the AU Commission, in collaboration with UNAIDS, will lead a digital advocacy activation under the theme “Protected and Informed”.

The objective of the #ProtectedAndInformed digital activation is to strengthen advocacy for HIV prevention and care in Africa.
