Today, the youth in Africa have been identified as critical stakeholders by both government and non-state agencies in the accelerated malaria fight due to their power to mobilise themselves, disseminate information, and hold leaders accountable. They are a vital population of over 845 million in Africa, dominating the global youth population approximated at 1.2 billion. They are the generation that can achieve #zeromalaria once and for all.
Every year, International Youth Day (12 August) presents a significant opportunity to raise their voices and call for more action, innovation, and funding to fight the malaria disease burden. To commemorate International Youth Day 2021, the African Leaders Malaria Alliance hosted a Virtual Intergenerational Dialogue with the African Union Commission Youth Division, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Malaria No More UK and the RBM Partnership to End Malaria to inspire their peers across the African continent and the globe to push for political action to end malaria within a generation.
The #MosquitoClapChallenge was also launched, led by International Afropop dancer and choreographer Ezinne Asinugo. When mosquitoes get in our faces, we will do a swat or a clap to get rid of them. Ezinne has turned this clap into an easy 4-step dance routine. You are invited to film yourself or with friends doing the 4-step clap!
